27 MAY 2017 NOTE: This site has just been reactivated and this page's code is still being tweaked. Your first click into the image gallery will trigger a LONG pause! (12 seconds?) But once you get there, speed returns to Immediate. I'm working on the issue.

The 204 issues of Ocular Trauma are listed on this page with their issue number, original date, and title. Click an issue in the list to jump to it in the lightbox gallery. If an issue has an asterisk after its name, that means you'll also find my comment on it in the gallery.

I've also listed some recurring characters below with all the issues they appear in. Click an issue number to jump to that issue.

I actually drew this image before Ocular Trauma ever existed. I did it as a joke to anonymously stick on the window of the molecular biology department where I worked. After a few days had passed, I collected the picture and introduced myself to the women working in the department, and was pleased to discover that they had been trying to find some mystery child whom they presumed had drawn the picture.

This comic has never been shown to not work for whomever gazes upon it, but whenever I see it, the stickler in me reminds me that the kind of dot and splatter artwork exhibited here is more obviously modern art rather than anything we'd call postmodern. Having thought this, I then excuse myself by declaring that (A) We can't see the whole painting anyway, so maybe the postmodern elements are out of frame, and (B) that 'Postmodern' is an incredibly broad term. Even full-time cultural theorists agree that it has many different meanings dependent on context.

And you all thought that to make this comic I just drew a bunch of crap and then wrote swear words around it.

Here I am making another cameo in my own comic (the first was in issue 46.) In making-of trivia, I intended the girl on the bench to be Asian, but I didn't succeed in drawing wide open eyes that transparently expressed both the surprise at being hit on the head and Asian ethnicity. So she's meant to be Asian - I just accept that it's not clear, and also that the fact of it makes no specific difference in meaning to this cartoon anyway. It's about hitting random folks on the head with a stick on Valentine's Day.

Issue 112 was the first Ocular Trauma to be presented in Megavision (TM). What's that, you ask? Well, it's not particularly amazing by today's standards. Prior to issue 112, I basically drew each comic onto the screen at a 1:1 pixel ratio. Come Megavision, I would draw any comic that I thought would benefit from the process on a canvas of triple the dimensions of the final image, or larger. When complete, the image was scaled back down to regular viewing size. To quote myself from 7th March, 2005: 'The result is that the whole picture is anti-aliased and most individual pixels are no longer apparent. Megavision (TM) offers the potential for more detail and subtlety due to the larger initial canvas, and basically gives a smoother final image.'

Bluch... artwork-wise, this is my pick for my the crappiest Ocular Trauma. There are plenty of others that look more ragged, or 'garish' (favourite adjective of critics) but I particularly dislike the line thickness in this one. On the plus side, it probably took me about five seconds to do.

The existence of this comic represents a political failure by myself. I had a policy with Ocular Trauma of avoiding as subject matter the kind of clique-culture referencing stuff which I find so lame, boring and immediately-dating about most webcomics. But then again, Questionable Content drove me freaking bonkers, so I just wanted to rip on it some. And look at what a great job I did. (PS - I've ripped lots of great artwork ideas from Questionable Content, and the artist also has a fine 'how I make the strip' page. It's just the story, characters, dialogue, setting, insularity, lame humour and pretty much everything else about the comic that I couldn't stand back in 2005.) 2017 update: Questionable Content is still going. What an awful discovery.

I'd like to apologise to you at this point for the excessive amount of girl-watching going on in this DVD-style commentary. Now that I've got that outta the way - see the girl in this one? This is the girl of whom we had a rear view in a blue dress back in issue 114, now in profile. She's Lebanese, so she came to mind when I wanted to put someone in this issue to speak some Egyptian. The hieroglyphics she's enunciating here semi-accurately spell out 'Hello'.

I showed this girl the comic, while at the bus stop after work, as my way of introducing myself to her. I don't know how weird she found that. (Probably not very, after all, she's a goth... hahaha!) Afterwards, we always had high quality conversations at the bus stop, but then she changed shifts at her workplace and to see her again was rare.

For this celebratory 200th issue I put myself and some of my working environment into the comic. There's my G5 Mac on which I used to draw Ocular Trauma with nought more than a mouse and a beat-up OS 9 version of Painter. There are my neato Samson studio monitor speakers. I never had a chair like that, though, the chair is all fiction... In terms of cameos from earlier comics, on the shelf you can see the face of Amber and her cat (issue 46), the Lego woman from the pub (issue 179), a Spiderman toy (issue 146), a trophy in the form of a X'lantan alien (170) and the bottle of wine shared by the couple on the nine hour date (issue 184). On the floor under the table is an uncouth bird (issue 69) and waddling towards me is a Canadian goose (issue 139), plus you've seen that painting on the wall before, too (issue 81). The title 'Spiffington Heath' is stolen from the sketch 'Spiffington Manse' by my comedic hero Shaun Micallef.

To conclude Ocular Trauma, I drew one issue entirely by hand and let myself appear again to boot. The original artwork for the final Ocular Trauma is now the property of one Johnny Cairo.
